Nature and motherhood are a perfect pair. My goal is to do more photography like this. It makes me feel so much more for the images than a posed photo. It’s hard for us as people to let go of the image we think we need when we take pictures. Smile, everyone look at the camera, say cheese…. It’s hard for me sometimes to not want to capture that old fashioned staged photo. However photos like these cause thought, conversation, feelings and a whimsical, romantic movie vibe that make us stop and look. If you want this look, please let me know and we will plan it together, you need minimal and non distracting clothing, few accessories and an open mind to feel one with Mother Earth!
Minnesota Elopement Photographer, Cambridge Minnesota, Crystalsphotographymn
As of 1/1/2020 I no longer photograph traditional weddings. I am making myself available for elopement/ couples sessions! They are pure magic, it is so beautiful to me to romanticize and document your relationship into photographs to share for generations!
Brotherhood // Cambridge Minnesota family photographer
The sweet bond of brotherhood, I have spent so many years witnessing it first hand and forever will be. Boys may be crazier and rowdier, there may be bruises and blood, but raising them is so dang rewarding! I have been photographing this family for over 6 years, at least 4 times a year, I always look forward to seeing them.
Howie ~ Minnesota newborn photographer, studio newborn session, Cambridge MN
Howie was the sweetest little baby to photograph. ( I always say that because even if your baby cries the whole time, they’re still the sweetest thing on this earth to me) I genuinely love newborn photography with my whole heart, I don’t pose babies or specialize in the swaddle photo, but I do capture your beautiful new life with you adoring your little angel.
Kendra // Summer maternity session // Cambridge MN family photographer
Summertime sessions feel so sweet and special in Minnesota, you can feel so much warmth in the photos, so much happiness and anticipation as this sweet couple awaits the arrival of their first child.
My sessions are very stress free, we wander around capturing natural moments, there is no pressure to “know what you’re doing” or feeling awkward in front of my camera, if anyone is awkward it is me, laughing and just having the best time during our shoot!

Details
Tiny details like drooly fingers holding onto little toes will go down as some of our most precious memories! Babies need to be captured, as a mother myself I know that our hearts ache to remember everything about our children. When we grow old we will cling to photographs and the fondest of memories of their laughter. It is all I want for my clients, to never wish they could remember but instead grab their photographs and feel taken back in time.
The little joys
Often times I find myself longing for an incredible vacation, or searching for new furniture to redecorate a room in my home. We can get overwhelmed with wants, and to do’s that we may forget to find those little joys that our life is filled with. I love vacations, decorating my home and I sweater shop like it’s my job, but I refuse to let myself stop seeing the wonders of life that we need to feel joy, the real kind of joy, the kind you can’t buy. Sunsets, moonrises, a warm drink in the morning, a deer peering through the woods, a long hug from a child or pet… those are some of my favorites. Often times at photoshoots I will run off mid-session chasing after a butterfly to photograph leaving my clients wondering if they’re paying for the butterfly or for their own photos, I smile because maybe it can give them something to laugh at, maybe it will make them realize we aren’t supposed to always be going point A to point B and photo sessions aren’t supposed to feel like work, but more like an hour of connection with your loved ones, an hour of freedom. Free spirit is what creatives, artists and photographers are usually called but we are all free spirits! Last night I was laying in bed scrolling through Facebook when I saw a post saying, the moon is incredible, go fast! Well I have dozens of moon photographs so ignoring that would’ve been fine but it certainly isn’t about the photograph, it’s the experience. Immediately I ran full speed through the house in my nightgown, barefoot down the rocky driveway, it was buried in trees so I hopped on the golf cart and drove further to the perfect view. For that minute I stared at the bright globe in the sky I thought of nothing else. It’s a feeling that we can have anytime we decide to enjoy the “normal” things. Each morning on the way to school last year I would say, boys look!!! The sunrise is so beautiful, often times they wouldn’t even look, but I knew I was teaching them something regardless. The other day one said mom look, I smiled not because of the painted colors in the sky but because it worked! My husband has seen me run to see the moon so many times, yet he has rarely if ever joined me, it doesn’t mean anything bad, it just means he has lost his wonder a bit and I will make him find it again, something that has overcome so many of us, one day soon, I imagine he will say, Crystal LOOK! I just know it! I refuse to lose my wonder. I hope you all enjoy your long weekend, big adventures that have obvious beauty or staying home having to search for it a little more. Both equally beautiful.

Tea with Crystal
I’ve felt the desire to connect more with you. Mothers and women that all are living these similar lives, yet we often never have the chance to talk and connect. Maybe this will let me feel connected, sharing things I love and hoping in return it gives you something to read and view that isn’t the negative world of social media. I often look to Facebook to feel connected yet I instantly am repelled by people opinions and horrible judgments of others, it is not what we need in our daily life. Constant reminders of hate and political views don’t belong in our mind when we wake up and want to have a peaceful day with our families. Encouragement, pretty words, stories of hope, and maybe links to cute clothes do! ;) I realize real issues are so important, but this will not be the space for them. I love spending my time photographing clients, hanging out with my boys and husband, drinking tea, reading, thrifting and constantly remodeling/redecorating our home. I thought I’d start sharing photographs of those things, poems, recommendations, and just uplifting stories or peaceful ideas to inspire. I want everyone to find the simple joys in life as I work to do the same.
I’ll start here. Nature. When I was in my teens and 20’s I didn't find too much enjoyment in nature, I saw bugs, weeds, dirt, I thought it to be quite boring spending any long amount of time outdoors. After my sons started growing and loving the outdoors, I found myself spending all of my time out there, I also spend 10+ hours a week outside just doing photo sessions, numerous hours at football practices and games, dog let outs and early morning walks. I began feeling connected. I saw leaves with flickering light bouncing around from the sunshine, I heard soft sound of singing birds, I began to crave the blanket of big oak trees overhead and the soft earth beneath my bare feet. Four pedicures a month wouldn’t fix my feet now, I don’t wear shoes in the summer! I love collecting and drying natural flowers and foliage, adventuring through trails and fields is done on the daily, snakes don’t scare me anymore, bugs don’t really bother me and I dream of living a nature inspired life inside just as much as outside. Decorating my home with woods, stones and organic materials has given me a peaceful feeling in each room of our home, it has also given our home a timeless feel, one that isn’t on trend and won’t ever go out of style. Our vacations have also become less of fancy restaurants and outings and more of being in the water and seeing the local wildlife. I know dream of being a nature photographer one day when my boys are grown, traveling the world capturing all of the worlds animals. Dreaming is a must for a peace filled life, it’s so enjoyable to imagine doing things you love and having dreams come true! It gives your brain a break from everyday stresses and I find it so calming.
I hope my sons grow up wanting to be outdoors with their families as much as I love being outdoors with them! During covid-19 as we have all been staying home so much more, it has been a true gift to go outdoors, walk, breathe, and just know that we are right where we are supposed to be. Tomorrow morning my alarm will go off at 7 am and I will wake to make a chai tea, tip toe out to the patio trying not to wake the dogs, (the boys would never wake that early) I’ll sit on our swing and wake slowly to the sun rising.

Sweet six months, Crystal's Photography MN - Cambridge Minnesota family photographer
Six month sessions are often the sweetest, they are learning to sit and full of personality, yet so tiny and babylike still! This past week I had three six month sessions which was a dream! All wore the tones I love to photograph and my natural light studio provided a beautiful backdrop!
Daydream maternity session, Crystal's Photography MN - Cambridge Minnesota maternity, newborn photographer
I often spend my days with a creative cloud passing through my head, it’s like a confusing daydream of bathroom remodel ideas, beautiful things to make or photo sessions I want to put together, ones that make me feel like my work is exactly how I wish it was all of the time! This session made me happy! The reason I recommend natural and light colors isn’t because it is your favorite outfit or the style you wear everyday, it is because it is the quietest color that lets the subject be the focus. Soft colors seem to make you feel something special, so next time I say I love white, tans, muted neutrals, my reason behind that is so you love your images more!

Dalton & Kaycee, Minnesota fall wedding at Hope Glen Farm, Cottage Grove
This beautiful wedding was a day filled with joy! It took place at Hope Glen Farm in Cottage Grove Minnesota on a warm fall day. The ceremony site was adorned with a draping garland running down an old oak tree, with an abundance of rose petals on the ground where they would stand and say their vows. From the tree fort on the property, to the guys "party ball" in their getting ready suite the whole wedding boasted with joyful moments laughter! Kaycee, your heart is so beautiful and your outward beauty is obvious, I am so grateful to have become friends with you over the course of planning your wedding day!

Carly - Beauty, boudoir film session.
I love having amazing girlfriends that will throw on a silk slip and model for me! It is so fun to capture women, in history, so many famous artist draw and paint women, I can see why, I love this fine art approach to capturing a boudoir session. This is simply beauty. Carly, you are simply lovely, and I adore these images of you! The images with the distortion are from a 33 year old roll of black and white kodak x-pan a lady at a garage sale gave me! The others HP5 and Fuji400H.

These two have such a great connection, it really shows through images when couples aren't afraid to interact with each other! This Woodbury Minnesota location at sunset was breathtaking! Photos taken at the Jake Anderson workshop.

This beautiful styled wedding shoot was put together by Jake Anderson for his workshop in June. It took place at the beautiful Outing Lodge in Stillwater Minnesota. The shoot captured the fleeting beauty of the evening, romantic setting and fresh foraged florals. I shot these images with my Contax 645 on medium format fuji400h film, developed by Photovision and Fast Foto. I am falling in love with fine art photography, especially for weddings, it's uniquely beautiful and really captures light, movement and details so beautifully.
Again, a HUGE thanks to Jake Anderson for this wonderful workshop! He is an amazing photographer and teacher! Go follow his work www.jakeandersonphoto.com www.instagram.com/jakeandersonphoto
